Quietly, and without our conscious permission, we are all guided by a set of internal narratives. We like to call them your 'Financial Autopilot'.
Think of your beliefs about Life Insurances, writing a Will and leaving a legacy like a plane's autopilot. The course was programmed long ago, based on the 'flight lessons' you learned from your family growing up. That autopilot has kept you flying, but is it actually taking you where you want to go? Sometimes, we need to check the coordinates and make sure we're not flying on an outdated flight plan.
If this is a new concept, no worries, here are three gentle questions to help start your thinking.
"What was the first lesson you ever learned about money?"
"In your family, was talking about Wills and inheritance seen as practical planning or as tempting fate?"
"Finish this sentence: 'When it comes to planning for the future, my family's motto was always...'"
Chances are, you've just uncovered same 'unwritten rules' that may be working in the background, unseen and unchallenged.
These 'automatic behaviour scripts', often unconsciously formed in our childhood experiences and environments, act as an inner voice, subtly shaping our views on everything from our choice of careers to our relationships.
- And when it comes to the profound task of organising our Will documents and Estate Planning documents as part of our legacy, it’s often these deep-seated beliefs, that so often hold us back.
- That feeling of avoidance, which we mistake for simple procrastination, is rarely about the task itself. It’s probably your personal behavioural script at work.
Introducing the Sapience Legacy Script Identifier tool
To help bring this complex idea into the light, we have developed the Sapience Legacy Script Identifier tool - a simple tool designed to help you gently uncover the hidden emotional narrative that may be guiding your legal related decisions.
- This framework is a cornerstone of our upcoming book, 'Life's Great Conversations: A Guide to Protecting Your Family, Securing Your Future, and Living with Peace of Mind.'
- Published by How Why Media in early 2026, it's designed to be a thoughtful companion that not only explores these psychological barriers within a broader philosophical context, but then provides the complete and remarkable solution to help you finally get your estate plan in place.
Legacy defined: From an estate planning point of view, a 'legacy' is a gift of personal property, money, or assets transferred to a person or organization through a Will document. It is the legal term for what's more commonly known as a 'bequest'.
And while 'legacy' can broadly refer to the overall impact or values you leave behind, in the strict legal sense of estate planning, it specifies the distribution of your assets after death.
The Legacy Script Identifier (SLSI - R1.2)
How to Find Your Legacy Script. This revised version focuses on simplicity, immediate self-reflection, and non-judgmental archetypes to make the process more engaging and less intimidating for the reader.
Step 1: The Questionnaire
Read the 12 statements presented. As you read, reflect on your gut feelings, not just your logical thoughts. Using the scale, rate how strongly each statement feels true for you.
- 1 = Doesn't feel like me at all
- 2 = Rarely feels like me
- 3 = Sometimes feels like me
- 4 = Often feels like me
- 5 = Feels very much like me
- 6 = This is completely me
The answer selection slider will look like this:

Step 2: Find Your Core Beliefs
After rating all 12 statements, the framework will use the choices you rated the highest or that resonated most powerfully with you emotionally, and then calculate your dominant and secondary scripts at work when it comes to Estate Planning conversations. These represent your core beliefs.
Step 3: Identify Your Behavioural Script
Use the key below to see which Legacy Script corresponds to your selected statements. The script that appears most often is your Dominant Legacy Script. The one that appears second-most is your Secondary Script.
- The Ostrich (Legacy Avoidance)
- The Monarch (Legacy Status)
- The Martyr (Legacy Worship)
- The Architect (Legacy Vigilance)
This method is faster, avoids clinical scoring, and zeroes in on the beliefs that have the most emotional power over the reader.
