Amanda Fisher: Welcome to episode seven of the Seeing Through The Numbers podcast. Today I'm talking with Drew Browne from Sapience Financial about insuring business expenses.
Drew is a straight-talking Financial Adviser who believes life is not about money. He's focused on helping small business owners and their families protect and provide for those they love and what they are responsible for. Drew Browne: Hi Amanda, I am really happy to be here.
Amanda Fisher: Excellent, so tell me a little bit about yourself and Sapience. I'm going to ask too many questions all at once, and what's a certified BCorp?
Drew Browne: My business is called Sapience Financial & Investment, and the word sapience actually means wisdom from unusual places. I suppose if you go have a look at the old English meaning, there's a little bit of a wry smile in there. And it's really, I suppose, an extension of understanding that business smarts is not just charisma, it's actually applying your mind to what's needed. The word sapience actually means wisdom from unusual places, and our logo is actually a logo that was designed from a South African tribe, where they actually understood the importance of wisdom and what they would do is they hire out their elders to the local tribe, who would then hire out their own elders back to the other tribe and they would exchange wisdom.
Amanda Fisher: Wow, that's awesome!
Drew Browne: It is, as I suppose the idea is that wisdom actually counts and there's a commercial exchange for it. I suppose like lots of things, we always like to say, "It's always best to learn from others experiences rather than make the mistakes yourself and have to pay for it."
Amanda Fisher: True, true. Yes. Yeah, learning from other people's mistakes is always a cheaper option if we can do it.
Drew Browne: That is so true. And you asked what is a certified BCorp, a certified BCorp is actually a new international certification. And it's actually quite a large movement of businesses using business practices and principles for the benefit of the community around them. So a certified BCorp is an organization who has to apply for certification. They get judged on five key areas, and every two years we are monitored and we have to re-certify. And if you like, you could say, we compete with each other to be the best for the world, rather than best in the world.
Amanda Fisher: Wow, that's so cool. So wow, you're very different to most financial planning people that I've come across so, wow.
Drew Browne: Well that's good, because we believe that life is not about money, it's about so much more but when you apply a wisdom overlay, the reality is we live in a commercial world and there are commercial realities, and we all have to learn how to manage our cash flow.
Amanda Fisher: Very true, and that's a great lead into business expense insurance, which is something that ... I don't know, is it new or has it been around for a long time and no one knows about it? What's the story with that in terms of its history and where it's come from?
Drew Browne: Yeah, so it's a good point. Look, I started my career in financial services some 20 years ago, we won't count the years. And it arose out of a past career I had in law where I got sick. In fact, I got very sick, and I got so sick that I lost my contract with my employer. And I was off work for at least two years, and the problem was, I ran out of income. Now, when you run out of income and you no longer have a job, life is very difficult because there are fixed expenses that have to be paid. That was a time when I had a mortgage in the old government home fund days, and that was when interest rates were 19%.
Amanda Fisher: Ouch, ouch, ouch!
Drew Browne: For those people who haven't yet been through a recession, good for you because there's one coming.
Amanda Fisher: Yes, thanks for the heads up on that one, but..
Drew Browne: It is, we've got about, we've got three or four years and we're sorted, so get it together now, but anyway ...
Amanda Fisher: And it's tough when interest rates are that high, and I know there were some horrendous loans floating around at one point. By the sound of it, you were at that point, the rates were just ridiculously through the roof. Even more so than the ... sort of the ordinary, if you like, mortgage rates, which were still jolly high at that point in time as well. And times were really, really-
Drew Browne: Absolutely.
Amanda Fisher: Without an income, wow. That would have been tough survival.
Drew Browne: And what you can say is, the mortgage I was paying was in this year, 2018, the rate was four to five times higher than what was average. So, my life in financial services started when I realized, "I know nothing about this." No one's taught me even the basics about how to manage cash flow because what happened all of a sudden was a sonic boom of comprehension that I had fixed family expenses, that regardless of what I wanted to do, I could not avoid. The mortgage was fixed. The council rates were still fixed. Things like electricity and water, more or less, fixed. All of a sudden I realized, regardless of what's happening, there is a base level of expense that is required to keep, I suppose life and limb together. So, from that understanding, as I commenced business years later, it was always very front of mind that businesses have fixed expenses. There is a base level of income that you need to have for a base level of expenses. That's just there, you have the rent on the premises, you have your insurance, you have your professional costs. These things are there whether you're open for business or not. And, with all that, this is where business expenses comes in. Now, business expenses is actually fixed business expenses. So, in the world of insurance, when we push away the risks away from our business and our family, we push them to an insurance company to hold on our behalf. Fixed business expenses are those expenses that we can't really fiddle, if you know what I mean. The rent is the rent, it is what it is. The wages are the wages, they are what they are.
Amanda Fisher: Okay, so that includes wages as well, because I talked about fixed expenses versus variable expenses in the previous episode, and around the fact that fixed expenses are those expenses that you're going to have to have. Like you say, whether you've got an income or not, and knowing what that is part of identifying really kind of what your basic break-even number is, just to have the door open, let alone the fact that you've got then your variable expenses that will be specific to what the product that you're selling or the services you're providing. So, these business expenses are the fixed ones, but ... So, okay so tell me a bit more about what's included. obviously the rent, you've mentioned wages, so yeah I haven't thought of wages as being fixed in there…
Drew Browne: Yeah, absolutely. And wages of your employees that aren't directly involved in generating a revenue, like your PA, like your admin team, like the people who make the widgets, whatever that is. These things, you could say are more contractual in nature, so if you go you could say your bank fees and charges are fixed regardless.
Amanda Fisher: Right.
Drew Browne: Your cleaning costs are normally fixed regardless. Electricity, gas, water, fixed normally regardless. The fees for your professional associations, interest payments on the business loans is fixed regardless. Leases of your office equipment, or the motor vehicles, or the forklift, fixed regardless. Loan repayments for capital expenses in business is fixed regardless. You can even have things like your payroll tax, hate that, printing and postage, your rates if you're in that situation where you own your premises and you're fighting with the council for the clean up. Contractual advertising, leasing fees. Believe it or not
Amanda Fisher: It covers a wide, wide range and a much broader range than I thought it could.
Drew Browne: Yeah.
Amanda Fisher: I kind of had in my mind, I guess, things like, yeah your rent but see, actually, when I think about it, salaries makes sense, so the wages, yes. But rent and perhaps your electricity, and some of those basic ones.
Drew Browne: Telephone, your comms, internet, your PABX system, your point of sale. Because when you think about it, most of these things are contractual.
Amanda Fisher: Yes, got you.
Drew Browne: So, if you can see that it's more contractual, more likely than not you have to think about, is this a fixed expense? Now there's some things which are quite straight forward, but there's somethings that are a little bit new, and that's where working with a financial advisor that understands small business is useful because we go to the financial underwriters and we say, "Give us a ruling."
Amanda Fisher: Right.
Drew Browne: "We have this type of machine for this reason and this is what it does and the light goes bing. Our attitude is this is a contractual expense, yadda yadda." And we go from there. Now with all these things, once you realize that there is a base level of cost, you've got to scratch your head and say, "Running a family and running a business, it involves the same consideration." How be it the expenses are different, it's the same thing.
Amanda Fisher: It is, isn't it? And what's going to be surprising, I think for most people, will be how much ... I guess the vast proportion of a lot of business expenses, if you talk about your overhead type expenses, they all fall into this contractual
Drew Browne: They do.
Amanda Fisher: ... kind of fixed expenses, the variable ones will relate to more the actual delivery of service and the sale of a product and the hard costs of that, which is your cost of sales and for me, I always talk about cost of sales in a service based industry as including wages, or the salaries of the people that are delivering it but again, you can't just sack someone if you've had some money problems.
Drew Browne: No.
Amanda Fisher: Because you've got ... So how long does business expense insurance last for? When would you claim on it? What are the events that would trigger a claim? How long would the insurance pay on for?
Drew Browne: Yeah, good one. There's three things that we would need to think about. So ostensibly, the first thing is, if you are a sole operator and you are 100% responsible for the income that pays the expenses, you're 100% responsible. But, for people that are in partnership, let's say they both do sales and they both bring in 50% of the revenue. In practical terms, you could say that they each are 50% liable for 50% of the expenses. So, the first thing is to realize who is the generator of the income that pays the expense? The second thing is, what are the trigger events? When you're looking at this insurance, this is what's called personal insurance, not general, the difference is quite straight forward. Personal insurance covers a person in something that happens to them, where general insurance might be glass breakage, which is things insurance. Business expenses insurance as I'm speaking of is a personal insurance product that will pay for 12 months if the person generating the income that pays expenses is either sick or injured, and can't work. If you are like my butcher who went on a double black diamond ski run, he actually had the good sense to call me the week before, just to make sure that his income protection would cover him if he had an accident, and of course it would. The good thing is that we also had business expenses in place because the reality is this, if you have income protection insurance in place, the law says the maximum you can insure is 75% of your income so let's make the numbers work. If you're earning 100k, the maximum you can insure that money for is 75%, which is 75k. Now pause here, normally people think, "Okay, I could skinny through, I could survive, I could recover on 75% of my income." But if you don't know what your fixed business expenses are, you're now having to pay those fixed costs from only three quarters of your previous income anyway, and that's where people come unstuck. So you'd need to have income protection that protects your ability to create the income and you have business expenses insurance which protects your ability to pay those expenses if you're sick or injured and can't work.
Amanda Fisher: Right, so this is in conjunction then with your personal sickness and accident?
Drew Browne: Now, this is the challenge. This is where you need to have a small business financial advisor who is across all of this, because now you're stepping into the murky world of some companies require you to have income protection and then as what's called a rider, they'll offer business expenses. But other companies, kind of better ones, say, "Hey, it's a separate issue. We'll give you separate insurance, separately for business expenses." The reality is, you need to find something that works as part of a strategy for what your business does, what your responsibilities are and that's where you'd work with an advisor like me.
Amanda Fisher: Right, okay so personal income protection insurance is always in my mind, and it does obviously, it covers my home bills. That covers the mortgage, the food costs, the whatever and yes, it's 75% so yeah, we'll be eating baked beans while I'm off sick but you know, hey, at least we'll pay the mortgage.
Drew Browne: Absolutely.
Amanda Fisher: But I'd never thought then about that fact that the business still has its expenses that need to be paid because the income that I have insured is what I take out of the business, and that's after I've paid all the business expenses.
Drew Browne: That's right.
Amanda Fisher: I guess, perfect example, my business is 100% reliant upon me in terms of the revenue so if something happened to me, then there would be no income coming through the business and yet, there would still be these fixed contractual requirements that would still need to be paid.
Drew Browne: Absolutely, and the idea behind business expenses insurance is that we need to make sure you still have a business to go back to when you get over your sickness or your injury.
Amanda Fisher: Right.
Drew Browne: If you look down that road, if there was no business to go back to, your chance of recovery might be a bit more delayed.
Amanda Fisher: Mm-hmm (affirmative), true.
Drew Browne: Because you'd certainly not be in a good mental health position. The importance of your fixed business expenses means that if you are one of the one in five statistics where something happens, you'll recover, you'll respond, and you'll rebound and there's a business there waiting for you. Locum costs are also covered by business expenses insurance, so if you're a solicitor and something goes wrong and you have a car accident, and you can't do what you need to do, you can bring in a locum and that's a fixed contractual cost.
Amanda Fisher: Ah, right, okay, so that's how particularly your solo business owners operate ... can continue the business on, is they're getting somebody in to manage the business. I guess if you've got the fixed overheads being covered by the insurance, then that helps to keep the doors open and have somebody step into your role in the business to keep it operational while you're dealing with it?
Drew Browne: Yeah, and the reality is, everyone's situation is very different. Obviously, our conversation today is very high level and so this is not advice for only one ear, but you need to look at what is your base number? What is the number you need in your family, what is the number you need in your business? It's really a great question to ask because before you can answer that, you've actually had to have thought through a number of cash flow issues.
Amanda Fisher: Yes, and part of that then is looking then at ... you've got your personal cash flow that would be covered by your income protection, you would potentially then have your business expenses covered by the business expense insurance, but then if something happened to you personally ... but then you'd also have general business insurance that would happen in the case of some calamity, like the fire, the glass break-in, some natural disaster or other disasters that might occur in your business premises that would stop you from doing business as well, but it is all about knowing what these numbers are and what the cash flow is and what the implications would be, which is coming back to everything I always talk about is, how does all this come back into the cash flow? Before we go on into that, I just wanted to ask you, when's the right time to be thinking about taking up business expense insurance? Is that at start up, when you're commercially viable when you're in a cash flow crisis? When's the right time to be thinking about this?
Drew Browne: Yeah, look, I think the best time to start thinking these things through is two-fold. At the point of start up, as part of your cash flow projections, put into those number sequences what the costs are to the business and simply realize that your fixed business insurance costs are just a fixed cost.
Amanda Fisher: They're part of those ... another contractual fixed cost and I guess part of that then is, is it expensive?
Drew Browne: No it's not, because it only lasts for 12 months, in practical terms, what my underwriters normally like to see is that there's been business activity for 12 months so we can verify the income. The best case scenario might be 18 months. I always say this is the one question you should ask your accountant four times a year. I always say make them work for their money, which is, "Hey, in the last quarter, what percentage of my revenue had to go to fixed business costs?" By normalizing that conversation, so you're looking at cases, a stable path, or no something odd happened, or you need to just normalize this conversation so start thinking about this before you start. Then, when you're at 12 months or 18 months of revenue and things are stable, that's when you'll be thinking about that, but especially for people who are funded in start-ups. So they may have a capital injection, they may take a loan, those people there, they need a greater level of cash flow management because if you have an injection of 300k from a venture capitalist or a family office, there are commercial expectations that they would have of you, that you are protecting the processes and the known risks that you are facing.
Amanda Fisher: Yeah, that's a good point. So is there some easy way of working out what those expenses are, how much they might add up to?
Drew Browne: We have a PDF document which lists the top most common fixed business expenses that people have. So I think there's 10 or a dozen items. Now, what we've done is put it into a single PDF with editable fields so people can simply download the document, type in what they believe are their costs and then at the end of the month, end of the quarter, tally how they are going. I always say, "Look, get it out of your head, get it on paper, get it into a dedicated document so you can say, 'This is part of my cash flow plan.'"
Amanda Fisher: That's perfect and I think having that where people can fill something in and look at it, I think it's great to be talking about it, obviously we are which is great, but for people to do more than just think about it, but put it down in black and white, start to see the numbers, it's a bit like when I help people to create their forward cash flow and they look at the numbers and see what they look like and suddenly the lights go on and it's, "Oh wow." Good or bad, "Oh wow," as to what's happening, but it's there, it's so much easier when you can see it and I think to see just how much those fixed costs are, thank you so much for sharing that PDF with us. It will be in the show notes below and so do check that out and fill it out, have a look at it, listeners, and see what your numbers are. Then potentially start looking at ... thinking about in the first place, what would be the impact if you're unable to work, and maybe then start looking at what needs to be done to make sure you've got those insured so that if something does happen to you, you've got those costs covered and you're not having your family or someone else trying to deal with that on top of just your normal household bills that would be paid out of your income protection insurance.

I'm a little bit aware of it, but not to the depth that you've gone into here for our listeners, so thank you very much for that. Before we finish up, I have a few different questions for you.
Drew Browne: Shoot.
Amanda Fisher: If you were to recommend to our listeners one business book that has made an impact on you, what would it be and why?
Drew Browne: Oh gee, there are so many good ones, aren't there? I think my all-time favourite business book is one from 1997, it's a bit old school, and it's called Intelligent Leadership. It's by an Alistair Mant, it's an Australian book, and it's about business leaders and the idea of understanding complexity and then exercising judgment. I suppose you could say it's old school, it's not about how you look, or the charisma that you have or not, it's about your
proven ability to do the job and to exercise judgment under pressure that actually has a reasoning behind it. So that's my favourite one, Intelligent Leadership, Alistair Mant.
Amanda Fisher: Okay, excellent, and we'll make a note of that and have that in the show notes for our listeners as well. What's your favourite business app that you're using at the moment? Why and how do you use it?
Drew Browne: Ooh, favourite ... that's an even harder question than a book, isn't it? I think the one I use a lot and I say, "Where would I be without it?" Is the good old Google Sites, the Google website builder, and I use that for our internal intranet. So all our data goes in there, all our education, all our learning, our conferences, we put into our Google Sites and our onboarding procedures, everything goes in there and I can't see how a business can work without its own intranet, its own repository of data. At some point as well, look, we can access it remotely, staff can leave comments about what's working, what's not. I think if you are a learning organization, and if you're not, you're not going to be in business tomorrow, if you are a learning organization, you've got to have your own intranet, and I use Google Sites for that. Love it, could not exist without
it.
Amanda Fisher: Okay, awesome, perfect. Just to finish up, what is the one piece of advice you'd give to our listeners to help them with their cash flow?
Drew Browne: My thinking is this. When people know better, they do better. I would say the one piece of advice is, work out what your base level is. Work out what is your cost to survive and then build upon that to the point where it's the cost to thrive.
Amanda Fisher: Exactly. What I'm always talking about is it's in the knowing of the numbers that you get the confidence and the clarity and the ability to make the decisions and take control of your business in terms of just knowing what's happening and being able to know when you need to plug a gap with some income because you're a bit short, or you need to know what your ... as you say, your baseline is. What's the minimum revenue you need to have every month just to keep the doors open? What's the minimum money you need to have every month to keep the doors open and have some extra for profit, effectively? Some extra their for enjoying and doing other things and perhaps some discretionary costs that just aren't in the baseline, which is pretty much a bare minimum to keep the doors open, whatever the doors look like, in business. So yeah, great
Drew Browne: Look Amanda, I've always said that when people feel more secure, they will lead a bigger life. So many business operators, through not knowing their numbers, force themselves to live smaller lives because they're not quite sure what an outcome might be, or they haven't got their head around forecasting. They live their lives in a way that seems to be very different from the reason why they began their small business journey. So when you know better, you'll do better, and our economy and our community, and our families need stronger businesses so we build stronger communities, so we have stronger families, and it starts with knowing your numbers.

Have you ever wondered why we’re hardwired to protect our most precious assets by insuring them – health care, home and contents, cars, and even holiday travel? So why is it that over two thirds of Australians continue to go to work and don’t have their own Income Protection Insurance in place to protect their ability to continue to be able to earn an income? Arguably this is our most valuable asset, according to Drew Browne, founder of Sapience Financial & Investment Services.
“Income Protection insurance is a financial safety net that can protect up to 75 per cent of a person’s income should they get sick or injured and cannot work,” he says. “After a flexible waiting period, an Income Protection policy could pay you until you either recover and return to work, or retire, which comes first. “Unlike an employer’s compulsory Workers Compensation insurance, its covers you 24 hours a day, seven days a week and can even index any long-term claim payments to keep pace with inflation. “The good news is for many people it can even insure your employers’ super contributions, and the cost of the policy paid from your super fund. “With all this good news, you’d think every income earning Australian would know about it.”
However, that wasn’t the case for Browne, whose fast-growing legal career was overtaken by a faster-growing throat tumour that cost him his health, his job and very nearly everything else. “We don’t stop to think about the long-term cost to ourselves and to our family if we lose our ability to earn,” he says. “And when you’re honest, the cost of the premiums for Income protection insurance are not the issue; the issue is you don’t think it will even happen to you.” Browne says he was fortunate - he was able to keep hold of his house. He “only” lost his career, his super and just about everything else.
A driven man, Browne made sure he would never risk his family’s situation in such a way again. Five years later, when he’d recovered, he was determined to ensure others didn’t have to suffer the indignity of being financially dependent like he did. He returned to education, earned a host of new skills and qualifications including an advanced diploma in financial services. In 1999, Browne then launched a business that was to become Sapience Financial & Investment Services, specialising in educating people about using Income Protection insurance as part of their financial safety net strategy.
This is a very personal mission for Browne to this day. “I know the carnage of not having a financial safety net and how you quickly slipped between the cracks when you have a long-term sickness or injury,” he says. “Nobody had ever taken the time to tell me about financial options and my parents certainly didn’t model that behaviour for me either. “Our kids learn about the financial world by the actions we model for them and the things we talk about. I believe it’s never too late to start being a better financial role model."
In 2017 Browne created a free downloadable eGuide for his clients called 31 Good Money Habits to Model for your Kids. The same year he received a Westpac Business of Tomorrow Award for Technology and Financial Advice to niche segments of the community.

[00:02:32] Drew Browne: Tracy thank you for the opportunity; my name for those who don't know is Drew Brown. my company is called Sapience Financial and Investment Services, and for people who say, 'hang on what does the word sapience mean?' it actually means 'wisdom from unusual places'. So. I work in the financial services space and my specialty is working with family members and families who have businesses, primarily to help them protect [00:03:00] and provide - to make sure that if something happens in a business, it doesn't then have a negative impact upon the family and vice versa. I suppose you could say I'm the big picture Financial Advice guy.
[00:03:12] Tracy Sheen: What was it about the Better Business book that intrigued you?
[00:03:17] Drew Browne: I think the concept of writing a piece for The Better Business Book was really interesting because in my work, I see that all businesses and families are made up of stories.
[00:03:30] Each one is normally succinct. It's a block. It's a piece of time captured and if you don't understand the stories of their lives, of their businesses, you really have no idea of where their future was going and how to help them get their better. So stories and the lives of people are a critical part of understanding for what I do.
[00:03:55]Tracy Sheen: Tell me what is your chapter called? And what was the thinking [00:04:00] behind it?
[00:04:01] Drew Browne: My chapter is found on page 230 and it's called, 'Your cheques in the mail and so is your confidence' and I suppose the tagline is 'courage and confidence never arrive at the same time in business'.
[00:04:16] Tracy Sheen: It's your assertion that courage is a learned skill. Why is that so?
[00:04:23] Drew Browne: Absolutely. Look I've been doing this for 20 years plus and it won't count the plus but I've always thought that Courage was in fact a character trait in the same way that some people are introverts some people are extroverts - and your somewhere stuck in the middle with what you genetically got.
[00:04:42] But I've since changed my view about courage as a trait; It's not. It really is a learn-able skill and I think what I've seen repeatedly over time and time is, that courage is the choice that has to come first before you even have a capacity; [00:05:00] well before you even have confidence. Courage really is the first pivot point and I suppose you could save you unpack that idea,
[00:05:10] It's the issue of dealing with doubt because doubt is something that takes you to the edge of what you know and allows you to look over the edge to what you don't know. And at that point, it’s not a thinking issue It's not a matter of your brain, It's a matter of your heart where your heart is that's unknown. Traditionally that’s scary. But the reality is until we all learned the skill on how to push out into the unknown, you will never discover not just the new worlds, but you never discover the type of person you will become on the other side of that journey.
[00:05:48] Tracy Sheen: How does one tell the difference between courage and confidence?
[00:05:53] Drew Browne: To tell the difference between courage and confidence actually requires that you listen to your stomach, to [00:06:00] your gut because confidence always arrives late. One of the analogies I use, we have Australia Post here, which is our national postal courier who's not always known for being as fast as they would promise
[00:06:14] I've always said that courage is something that arrives like an overnight parcel. But confidence is like something that arrives by the snail mail through Australia Post - its probably a week late and it's probably going to the wrong address and it's probably waiting for you at the post office because it got cut open and because there’s one 1 cent postage due before they release it to you. Courage is very much a choice about going through a set of actions and knowing what you need to do piece by piece. Confidence only comes after you've seen the big picture and you've had a degree of success. Confidence is like that fair-weather friend, who are after you have [00:07:00] sacrificed, who are after you have achieved some degree of fame that fair-weather friend, and I use the word friend loosely, comes to you and says, 'I knew you had it in you, I knew you're always going to achieve this.'
[00:07:16] Confidence can only come after it's seen the visual tangible success and proof of what really courage has actually initiated and achieved. I think courage and confidence do not make good bed fellows.
[00:07:34] Tracy Sheen: Do they share any traits in common or do you think that once you understand the difference, the flags are so different you'll never confuse the two again?
[00:07:47]Drew Browne: I think the process is really quite different. Their similarities are they begin with the letter 'c' and that's about it. I think confidence really is a settled [00:08:00] position looking backwards. Because confidence can't look forwards without looking backwards for some form of pattern to recognize. Where courage really is something that looks forward to say, 'I see the problem, I deeply empathize with the person or the people who have their problem - I needed to do something about it. I suppose I would see courage is something that compels you forward confidence is something like a compliance manager who comes after the deal and says, 'I knew you had it in you, I never had a doubt' and of course that's where confidence really isn't useful because it's always late.
[00:08:43] Tracy Sheen: Obviously done a lot of thinking and reflection on the differences in on the need for courage in business. One of the things you talk about in the chapter is a deep price too shallow thinking. Could you go into some detail about what you mean by that?
[00:08:57] Drew Browne: One of the constant frustrations [00:09:00] I have in my world is that people actually don't take the time to tell their full story.
[00:09:05] So you end up not getting even half the picture you get a small vignette, a Twitter fight version, if you like, and really the details of our lives are the things that actually hold the foundation's together. So, to simply gloss over things, is so 1990s. If you were looking at the point of what we used to value and why then, and what we choose to value and why now, I think is quite interesting.
[00:09:39] In the 1990s when access to the internet was not as deeply ingrained with social issues as it is now, we would look at the icons of business, the paragons of fame and they would look secure and premeditated and deliberate [00:10:00] and 'failure free', and in some way they were presented as being an icon to emulate.
[00:10:09] But what we found, as we now have a world that is smaller, as we now have relationships that are more integrated, what we found today is 'humanity is our biggest point of difference'. Within business the system's drive the company but the people drive the systems. It is our humanity and our capacity to actually, learn dump it, learn fresh, dump it, learn a fresh again and continue to learn that is our only real advantage. I think what's happened in the past is that we have admired what we were told to admire with our head. but [00:11:00] now as our hearts have understood the greater connectedness and understood that only advantage in our capacity to think through something - and to think through deeper into empathize with the problem and or the people who hold those problems, because it's that deep empathy that is the only thing that allows you to continue to maintain your motivation - through failure and failure again - until you find the mix, the motivation required to deal with that very raw human emotion is empathy. And empathy is a component of Courage.
[00:11:40] Tracy Sheen: You talk in the chapter about the story of David. It's an incredibly moving story. Can you tell us about the story and how you feel it relates to businesspeople?
[00:11:58]Drew Browne: Our lives are [00:12:00] composed of the stories that we live in and wonderfully of the stories that we are allowed to share and in the same way today's consumer looks at the brands around them and says is that brand worthy to become part of my personal growth,
[00:12:19] I think there are certain pivotal stories and relationships and interactions in our lives when we look at them and we say am I worthy to become part of your story. Am I worthy to become part of your personal brand?
[00:12:37] And that's an experience. I had with a guy called David and this was in a career a long time ago in a place far far away when I was actually working for the crown in a criminal case of child abuse and David was a seven-year-old witness.
[00:12:56] Now as I was running the case, so I got to [00:13:00] prepare the case and to speak with my witnesses ahead of time, and I was stunned because 7 year-old David and obviously that's not his name and all the identifiers have been removed but seven year old David was living with his foster parents because he'd been taken away from his birth parents because of a terrible terrible thing that happened.
[00:13:22] And as I sat with him with his long sleeve shirt buttoned up to the neck, I was struck by his candor, in talking about something so terrible that even to go back to that point is difficult. But he felt and he embraced his fear, but he just told it like it was because that was the part he was asked to play. And the interesting thing with David was, I felt, 'how [00:14:00] can I let my empathy for his situation propel me to excellence and to safeguard him. So I took my court security badge off and I, with his foster parents watching, I tucked it into the belt in his waist was his jacket covered it up and I simply said to him, 'look David I know 'what' happened to you, I just need your help today to tell me 'how' it happened.
[00:14:44] And he understood that distinction and I said, 'look, if you ever feel really afraid or nervous you can just put your hand on your hip we my badge is and you will know, [00:15:00] that I will know, that you're feeling scared and that's okay'. Later on in court David was exceptional. He embraced the fear of telling a wicked story in front of strangers.
[00:15:19] He embrace the fear of talking about issues beyond his age and explaining how something very bad happened, because he knew that I knew that it did happen, but I just needed his help today to tell me 'how'. And what I saw in young David was his choice to be courageous. Now it wasn't that he decided to ignore the fear or the itchiness or the
[00:15:58] the difficulty of [00:16:00] talking about such terrible things. He went past that. And he was courageous, and he went to the edge of the unknown. Looking out and seeing what was new and scary he knew what he had to do. He put his hands on his hips. And he stepped out. And David' story is just one of the many beautiful stories that I have been fortunate enough
[00:16:33] To be able to become part and then in some way they have been grafted into my story.
[00:16:38] And as we look back in time, it's always easy to see the 'dots isn't it and we can always look at those times, those pivotal moments those, people decisions that people make, where they have felt the fear, but they have pushed out into the unknown and normally that's either fueled by two things.
[00:16:57] Number one: massive trauma [00:17:00] or number two: massive deep empathy. And the reality is we cannot express or connect to massive trauma or deep empathy in 140 characters. No matter how good the Tweet is so for me there is a severe and a large cost to shallow thinking. And I think in a world that becomes more busy and more complex we all look for ways to chill out, veg out, escape, binge-watch absolute here I'm so there but there's a cost to that and I think sometimes we lose our ability to connect deeply empatheticly with the people who hold problems of which we can exist in business to solve, those same problems
[00:17:57] But it takes courage, it's a choice, [00:18:00] and we must make it.
[00:18:02] Tracy Sheen: You discuss in there a three-step sequence. I want to drill down on each of those if we can because I think they're an interesting take on how people can develop a sense of what, what's needed in regard to the courage and things. So, the first one you have there is, 'first you have to commit to the action you want to take'. What do you mean by that and how does one begin to put that in place?
[00:18:28] Drew Browne: I think there are many ways to achieve what we need to achieve in business. But if you're going to go down the road of learning about courage and making that one of your business steps, there is a process and the sequence the is critical - if you get it better front, it doesn't work
[00:18:46] Step number one for me is, you have to commit to the actions you want to take. We spoke earlier on about the need for deep empathy and our need to connect and think through deeper to the problems [00:19:00] and the people who hold those problems who we're actually needing to connect with. You have to commit to something because it's a mental choice.
[00:19:10] It's not about feeling that it's right or feeling that this would be exciting or feeling that the time is right. It has to be a mental decision because if you're pushing out into the unknown you will fail. Multiple times you may fail your way to the top but your ability to fail and fail again and not let it damage your motivation, requires a mental commitment and where confidence requires the existence of success already, a commitment is a choice - to push out into the unknown - but it has to be anchored in something other than money. It [00:20:00] has to be anchored with empathy because it's our humanity that gives us the edge to push out.
[00:20:07] Tracy Sheen: Does the commitment need to be a conscious one or can our subconscious lead us down the path that we need to go and have our awareness catch up?
[00:20:22] Drew Browne: It's a good question to ask, 'Is our commitment merely mental assent or is it also a heart connection?' The interesting thing with neurobiology today is the understanding of the connection of our physical guts with our physical brains and the idea that there's actually a much closer sympathetic interaction between the both.
[00:20:47] So in a strange way, initially we might think that the commitment is purely brain led, but I would suggest that a commitment is actually a tag-team-effort because at some point, [00:21:00] It is a response and normally a response to empathy comes from the gut; it comes from the compassion if you like and how be it it's fulfilled through the brain,
[00:21:13] I think we can unconsciously commit to something, but I think that is unusual because at some point we need to say, 'I am in.' There is something special and important about a declarative approach saying, I'm in, I'm committed to this and I think that's where accountability groups in business work better because it's 'I am in' in that public declaration of our intent that then requires the courageous walking through of the journey.
[00:21:49] So I think if you're going to have a deep commitment, it must at some point be a tag-team where it's triggered by the compassion in your gut. [00:22:00] And fulfilled through the requirements and the allocation of resources time, calories, even with a brain.
[00:22:08] Tracy Sheen: After we've made a commitment to the action that we want to take, the Second Step that you refer to is, 'then you need to be willing to feel the fear' regardless of that commitment. Talk us through that.
[00:22:22] Drew Browne: Being willing to feel the fear is actually two different processes in my mind. Being willing is actually The engagement, the allocation of resources emotional or otherwise to actually say I am in this and to realize that everything of value requires effort stretch, uncertainty. Now evolutionary makeup alone means we are wired to remove ourselves from perceived pain and discomfort and to seek a sanctuary in ease so being [00:23:00] willing to commit to something means there has to be an acknowledgement that there will be discomfort. Discomfort is the first sign of the potential for greatness.
[00:23:14] I mean who wakes up every day thinking, today? I just want to be average. Hopefully you don't not for long but to become anything other than average actually requires a willingness to commit through embracing fear. You must feel the fear. You must embrace the pain you must recognize that you will be stained by this, but you acknowledge that it's for a greater price.
[00:23:42] And that's where we'll talk about the deeper thinking because there's nothing sadder than to see a business joint venture going forward with a dozen people and all looks good. And then you see half of them fall off because they thought this will take [00:24:00] longer. This would take more resources. This is not what I thought it would be.
[00:24:04] This is uncomfortable. At some point I think to be successful in business you have to be prepared to do what other business people simply are not prepared to do. You need to learn how to have a willing heart to feel the fear, and continue through - that is the tax you pay towards awesomeness.
[00:24:28] Tracy Sheen: The final step in your three-step sequence
[00:24:33] Is to decide to be courageous, so you can take action. How is that different? What's the nuances between step 3 and step 2 and when do you know that you're at the precipice of the third step?
[00:24:50] Drew Browne: The problem is when you reach the third step is you often don't know you're there. And that's where your motivation has normally pushed you out already into that [00:25:00] unknown
[00:25:00] And as you look around as your courage starts to call for a refuel, your brain then kicks in to say. Oh my gosh, what have you done? Where are you now? You'll known as what? You're researching this. How can that be in that is the point when you realize I have decided to be courageous and you go back to your motivation and you go back to your first principles
[00:25:29] And you say, I am exactly where I committed to be in this is the fear I committed to embrace and I will continue. I think there's a big difference between courage under Fire and bravery in an instant. A long time ago in a tree far far away I was awarded for a particular task [00:26:00] that I decided to undertake and now the interesting thing was my task took me a year and a half.
[00:26:07] It was for difficult and I had to persist him. I found that very difficult. But those awards that I were receiving were actually also awards for people who were Brave Under Fire in the moment, and interestingly I'm sure all the awards were quite valid, but some were instantaneous events and others required the sustaining of effort in the sustaining of courage over a longer period of time.
[00:26:43] And I think when it comes down to deciding to be courageous there is an expectation that is not going to be brief. It's not a single event. [00:27:00] It's not a car accident. It is the recreation of life after a car accident. It is something of obsessively longer and deeper that requires a sustained application of the courage and the sustained application only can happen by deciding where you've made peace or where you've made a commitment or however you do that, but you have decided that this is what you're prepared to do.
[00:27:30] Tracy Sheen: Our times drawing to a close, the final question I have for you is, 'what's your best thinking, what's the single piece of advice that you can leave people with who read the chapter and are now thinking that it's time that they step up, that they done the courageous cape, what's your best thinking around, 'how does one start that journey?
[00:28:00] [00:28:00] Drew Browne: I think the beautiful thing of making adult decisions is that all of a sudden you only realize that you were making them after you've already made the first half a dozen of them, and that is the difference as we transition from a teenager to be an adult.
[00:28:19] It's not so much a hard line in the sand it's an attitude you've taken and you suddenly realize I've already stepped out; at that point I suppose the question is do I return to the safety of or do I take the second step. The wonderful thing about committing to an action you want to take and choosing to feel the fear regardless of what that is and deciding to persist is this; you get to create a product out of the uniqueness of yourself.
[00:28:54] And my Lord that is what the market needs. That is what the [00:29:00] world needs. Our only differentiating power in business is our Humanity our uniqueness. So my takeaway thoughts for those who've read the chapter is to write this up on your mirror, write this on your wall put it in your wallet engrave it on something do something and let this be a motivation for you because when people say why are you doing this, why are you bothering' You can say because you are creating a product out of the uniqueness that is you. Set yourself on fire and let the world coming to watch you burn.
